Timber Slabs
Most slabs are air dried first, then kiln dried to the finished moisture content.
At The Fine Timber Company, we kiln dry our slabs to help ensure that our customers don’t experience issues like twisting and cracking, after their project has been completed. Some slabs are air dried only. In this case they are air dried for several years. Air drying of slabs only occurs with about 1% of our slabs.
All our machined slabs are stored at our yard in Donnybrook and can be viewed there if required. Please call first.
In addition to the slabs on the website, we have rough sawn slabs that have not yet been machined and are not on the website. Once they get machined, they will be catalogued and put on the website.
Sloping edge means that the slab is narrower at one end than the other (specifically if searching on the catalogue). Delivery to your door in Perth is usually about $110.
We can deliver our slabs Australia wide, please call for a quote.
Unless otherwise stated all slabs are machined flat ready for sanding. We can also sand if required.
The dimensions are written on the slab in chalk. Length (m) x width (mm) x thickness (mm).
The width is that as measured where there is a chalk line drawn across the slab. It is not the widest or narrowest or average. It just gives you some idea. If there is only one line for width, that means that the slab is within about 50mm all the way along. The actual length of the slab will usually be about 50mm longer than the length written on the slab. This is to allow for the ends to be cut square. Please note that the slab will look WIDER at the end nearest the camera, then it actually is. Read the width written on the slab in chalk at each end.
The number written on the bottom of the slab is our database reference number. Refer to this number in any correspondence with me about the slab. Slabs from the same log will all have the same number followed by a letter in sequence corresponding to the slabs in sequence. i.e 1300a and 1300b and 1300c are sequential slabs from the same log. An additional letter indicates that they are from the same slab but cut shorter for some reason i.e one long slab has been cut into two shorter ones. i.e 1300aa and 1300ab are opposite ends of the same slab. In this case they could be butted up together and have a continuing grain pattern.
Book matched slabs have only one number for the two slabs.
Book matched slabs with a straight edge in the middle are photographed with a slight gap in between the two slabs so that it is obvious to you that they are two slabs. The width written on them is the width when they are pushed together i.e no gap.
Please note that if you do not collect your order within two weeks without having made alternative arrangements WE WILL CHARGE A STORAGE FEE OF $110 PER WEEK. NO EXCEPTIONS. THIS APPLIES TO ALL ORDERS NOT JUST SLABS.
These are NOT ALL of the slabs that we have in stock.

Timber Packs
We also package timber into bundles cut from the same tree so you can complete a project with matching grain and features.
Very often the packs are comprised of particularly figured or unusual timber. There is often more timber from the one log than is in the pack, so if you like a particular pack but don’t think there is enough timber in it for your project please contact us.
Figured Timber
We are always keeping a special eye out for highly figured timbers for that special woodworking project.
In addition to that which we can obtain as logs locally, we import figured boards from the US, especially Maple. Generally in stock we have birdseye, curly, figured, and spalted boards.
Depending on the type of figure these boards will be either quarter sawn or back sawn to bring out the best of the figure onto the face of the board.
Very often figured timber is sold as a complete pack, so check out the timber packs section.
You can also use the catalogue to search for figured, fiddleback, spalted, curly, birdseye and flame timber.
Mantelpieces
Many of our slabs are ideal for that feature mantel over your fireplace. Have a browse through our catalogue of mantelpieces for something unique. We classify them as mantelpieces because they are around 200-400mm wide, one side natural edge and much thicker than normal slabs - usually 70-100mm.
These are also suitable for nice thick resin coffee tables.
NOTE: UNLIKE our normal slabs, the width is measured to the bottom face of the slab. This is so that you know how much overhang you will have when mounted.
Please read the information on how our slabs have been marked at the beginning of the slabs page at the top of this section.
Timber Boards
Normally boards are cut from 50 to 350mm wide and 19, 25, 32, 38, 45, 50mm thick. Often we also have 75mm thick boards. Each board is marked for length, tree identification and any special feature that it may contain. This allows us to try to supply all the timber for a given project from the same tree so that it matches.
The boards listed below are indications that we normally hold these in stock. It does not imply that we will ALWAYS have them in stock.
Some of the timber species that we usually have is stock are: Pine, Norfolk Island Pine, Jarrah, Marri, WA Blackbutt, Wandoo, Sheoak, Yellow Tingle, Yellow Stringybark, Tassie Blackwood, Red Ironbark, Salmon Gum, Mallet, Banksia, Rock Maple, Tiger Maple, Ambrosia Maple, American Black Walnut, American Cherry, Alder, American Ash, American White Oak, American Red Oak, Spotted Gum, Rose Gum, Tuart, Sugar Gum, Tassie Blue Gum, Southern Mahogany, York Gum, Poplar, Kauri, Black Wattle, Cape Lilac, River Red Gum, Rock Oak, Swamp Oak, Karri Oak, Camphor Laurel, Paulownia and Raspberry Jam. And sometimes we have other stuff, so check in with us regularly.
NOTE: When we say that we have it in stock that means that it is in our shed, not that we can try and source it from someone else.
DOUBLE SUPER NOTE: The photos of the boards below are of boards that we have had in the past. THESE ACTUAL BOARDS ARE NOT AVAILABLE. BOARDS LIKE IT PROBABLY ARE BUT NOT THESE ACTUAL EXACT BOARDS.
PLEASE SEE THE PACKS SECTION FOR PACKS THAT ARE AVAILABLE. PLEASE CONTACT US FOR INFORMATION ON OTHER BOARDS. WE USUALLY HAVE ABOUT 50 CUBIC METRES OF BOARDS IN STOCK AT ANY ONE TIME.
Solid Timber Posts
We can supply a range of solid timber posts both green or dry for construction purposes. This includes posts with heart included or excluded. Sizes from 75 x 75 in 25mm increments up to 200 x 200 and occasionally larger. Let us know what you need.
Stair Treads & Stringers
We’ve got a great selection of timbers stair treads and stringers for that centre piece staircase. This is a new addition to our catalogue, so check back for more being added regularly.
Stair treads and stringers will be supplied as “standard and better” grade. They may have some small defects that require filling. “Select” grade may be available and will usually cost about 30% more.
Musical Instruments
Although we do not specifically cut large quantities of, or specialise in timber for musical instruments, we do usually have some beautiful pieces that are suitable for this purpose.
We usually have instrument grade, quarter sawn, book matched Sheoak.
We usually also have a supply of tiger Maple in soft Maple. Boards up to 350 wide and very highly figured. Sometimes also in Hard Maple.
We have a limited supply of birdseye Maple, although often sells out very quickly when it comes in.
We usually have American Alder in stock in 50mm thick boards.
Please contact us if you are looking for something special.
